Description:

A perennial, herbaceous plant with a pleasant lemon smell. The stems are 30-80 cm high, erect, or ribbed, branched, covered with glandular and simple hairs. The leaves are opposite, broadly ovate, rhombic or oblong, 2-8 cm long and 2-6 cm wide, glandular-fibrous beneath, bluntly toothed, petiolate. The flowers are pale yellow, white or pink, collected in 4-12 false spines, located in the axils of the upper leaves. The calyx and corolla are bilobed. The stamens are 4. The fruit is composed of 4 one-seeded, ovoid nutlets. The herb can be cultivated 

Usable parts:

The flowering upper and lower leafy parts of the plant. Depending on the purpose, it is harvested before or during flowering 

Collection time:

In summer - June-July

Composition of the herb:

It contains essential oil, the composition of which includes terpene derivatives: citral, citronenlal, geraniol, linalool, myrcene, aldehydes, tanning substances, resinous and bitter substances, mucus. It also contains three types of acids: caffeic, oleanolic and ursolic, enzymes, vitamin C, mineral salts, etc. 

Therapeutic effect:

pain-relieving, nerve-calming, relieves pain in the heart area, enhances vision, carminative 

Usage:

It is used for gastritis, neuroses of all kinds, nervous exhaustion, headache, dizziness. The herb is also used for high blood pressure Blood Pressure, herpes, neurasthenia, pharyngitis, laryngitis, epilepsy, melancholia, to stimulate the appetite, against fear, sleep disturbances, to strengthen vision, in rheumatism, sexual hyperexcitability.

It is used for chest phlegm, asthma, melancholy, abdominal pain, stomach heaviness, bad breath from the mouth, nervous headache, ringing in the ears, dizziness after mental overexertion, menstrual colic and elastic puke lifts. It is drunk as tea. 

 

Ways of use:

Internally:

One tablespoon is scalded with 250 g of boiling water, soaked for 20 minutes and drunk 1 cup of coffee in the morning, noon and evening before meals. 

It can also be used in the form of a tincture of 70% alcohol and drug, in a ratio of 10:3, by taking 20 drops in 50 ml of water, 3 times a day.

Externally:

It is applied as a poultice of fresh leaves for swellings, sore throats, toothaches, boils, mammary nodules in the breasts of nursing mothers, contusions and sprains, abdominal colic, cramps, etc. 

Bulgarian traditional usage:

The decoction of lemon balm it is used for nervous diseases, fear, nerves, silent insanity. A decoction of the herb is drunk in large quantities - instead of water in case of high blood pressure. To stimulate menstruation, drink a more concentrated decoction of 4-5 tablespoons in 1 liter of water. Lemon balm is also used for digestive problems, heartache, diarrhea, anemia, shortness of breath, orama
