Praise of the 100 Medicines

The ancient Chinese philosopherLao Tzuonce said:

From time immemorial, sages have sought to do good, even in the smallest of ways. They did not leave even the smallest mistake uncorrected. If you act in such a way, it can be said that you are taking medicine.

We present to you the 100 medicines of Lao Tzu:

1. To observe the principles of movement and rest, this is a cure.

2. To strive for flexibility of body and softness of character, this is a remedy.

3. To strive for the widest possible manifestation of kindness is a remedy.

4. Not thinking about profit and being guided by your duty is a cure.

5. To observe measure in everything is a cure.

6. Not taking more than your due is a cure.

7. Not yielding to the temptations of the flesh is a cure.

8. Getting rid of the desires of the heart (excessive ambitions) is a cure.

9. Despite the dislike you may feel, showing love is healing.

10. To strive for a reasonable use of everything (do not overdo it in anything), this is a cure.

11. Sincerely wishing people happiness is a cure.

12. To save in trouble, to help in difficulties, this is a cure.

13. Helping the stupid and naive to re-educate themselves is a cure.

14. Calling those prone to confusion to correct themselves, to find the right way out, this is a cure.

15. To protect the young and the immature from mistakes is a cure.

16. To enlighten and advise the misguided and erring is a remedy.

17. Helping the old and the weak is a cure.

18. Using your power to help people is a cure.

19. To sympathize with the forsaken and pity the lonely is a cure.

20. To be merciful to the poor and to help beggars alms is a cure.

21. Occupying a high position, to serve the inferior, this is a cure.

22. To be modest and condescending in your speech is a cure.

23. To treat with honor and respect those younger in rank, this is a remedy.

24. Not insisting on the return of old debts is a cure.

25. To be capable of sincere sympathy in trouble is a cure.

26. To be truthful in words, to maintain sincerity and trust in other people, this is a cure.

27. Not to argue about who is right and who is wrong, this is a cure.

28. To give up detours and strive for directness is a cure.

29. If you encounter aggression, do not react harshly, it is a cure.

30. If you are insulted, do not harbor an insult, it is a cure.

31. To shun evil and strive for good is a cure.

32. Give the best to others, keep the worst for yourself, this is a cure.

33. To give up the greater, taking for yourself the lesser, this is a remedy.

34. When meeting a sage, critically evaluate yourself compared to him, this is a cure.

35. Not showing off and not striving for ostentation is a cure.

36. Not to claim merit, but to undertake the most difficult, this is a remedy.

37. Not to boast of virtues is a cure.

38. Not to be silent about other people's merits is a cure.

39. Not complaining about hard work is a cure.

40. To hide secret evil (bad thoughts you know against other people) is a cure.

41. If you are rich, helping the poor is a cure.

42. Rising, knowing how to control yourself, it is a cure.

44. Not exaggerating your importance is a cure.

45. It is good to relate to the successes of others, it is a cure.

62. Controlling your anger and irritation is a cure.

63. Freeing yourself from the streams of thoughts is a cure.

64. Honoring elders is a cure.

65. And with closed doors, strictly taking care of yourself (not only in front of society, but also when you are alone), this is a cure.

66. Cultivating filial affection and love between relatives (bad relationships in the family disharmonize) is a cure.

67. To root out evil and encourage good is a remedy.

68. To live in purity and honesty is a cure.

78. Spreading wisdom is a cure.

79. Paying homage to the saints (the three pure ones - Lao Tzu and 2 heavenly deities) is a cure.

80. Not seeking to accumulate wealth is a cure.

81. Not to break orders and prohibitions is a cure.

82. Honesty, selflessness, faith and trust, this is a cure.

83. Not being greedy about wealth and money is a cure

84. Rejoicing that a person has energy and morals is a cure.

85. To bear an old man's heavy burden is light.

86. Getting rid of emotions and giving up haste is a cure.

87. To seek to incite men to good is a remedy.

88. Having wealth, being merciful, it is a cure.

89. To be kind in heart and responsive in thought is a cure.

90. Taking advantage of a high position, to do good, this is a cure.

92. To criticize frankly while observing the principles of fidelity is a remedy.

97. And in the worst sorrow not to infect others with sorrow, this is a cure.

98. Giving in to others is a cure.

99. To spare the inner (energy, spirit, body, feelings), this is a cure.

100. Creating life is a cure.
